Seit 2006 sammle ich Bildmaterial zum Thema „Bäume“ und 2007 entstanden meine ersten Baumbilder. Zeitgleich habe ich aber meine Wasserbilder weitergemalt – erst ab 2013 habe ich mich mehr und mehr vom Wasser distanziert und mich ganz auf Bäume konzentriert.
Bei diesem Thema interessiert mich einerseits das Oberflächenmuster der Bäume – bis jetzt insbesondere die hell-dunkle Verzierung an
den Stämmen von Birken – und anderseits die Silhouetten von ganzen Bäumen oder Baumgruppen mit ihren vielen Ästen und Zweigen, die auf der Bildfläche eine gewisse chaotisch-ornamentale Wirkung
erzeugen, sowie das Gefühl, dass sich dieses Muster ausserhalb des Bildes grenzenlos weiterverbreitet. Die Bäume mögen hier auch erscheinen
wie eine Art spitzenhaftes Gitter vor
dem jeweiligen Hintergrund. Anfangs habe ich oft Wasseroberflächen als Hintergrund zu den
Birkenstämmen oder anderen Bäumen verwendet und immer wieder eine reine Wasserspiegelung von Bäumen als Motiv gehabt.
In den neueren Arbeiten habe ich Spiegelungen von Baumsilhouetten an Fensterscheiben als ein Themenbereich – hier faszinieren mich die durch die Spiegelung erzeugten Verzerrungen und die leichte Unschärfe in der Darstellung, ähnlich wie bei einer Spiegelung auf der Wasseroberfläche, sowie die durch verschiedenen Bildebenen gewonnene räumliche Tiefe im Bild. Oft ist hier auch eine Deckenlampe als Lichtquelle auf der Innenseite des Fensters zu sehen.
Einen neuen Aspekt zum Thema bilden seit 2018 Straßenansichten in München: hier stelle ich die Schatten dar, die Kastanien nachts auf die Münchner Straßen und Hauswände werfen, oder beim Gemälde „Auf der Insel“ ist mein Bildthema eine Spiegelung von Bäumen auf einem verregneten Gehweg an der Isar.

Around 2006 trees and forest began to interest me more and more as a new subject matter in my painting: I took many photos, made some sketches and subsequently finished my first tree paintings the year 2007. Meanwhile, I continued to paint water – only since about 2013 have I totally focused on trees.
Here I am interested in two aspects in particular: firstly on the silhouettes of trees in general, on their basic form and the way they reach up to the sky and stretch out their branches; and secondly on the specific surface characteristics on the trunks of different tree species. So far I have been especially drawn to the light-dark patterning on the trunks of birch trees. The silhouettes of trees attract me in the way their numerous branches and twigs evolve a certain slightly chaotic but still very ornamental-like pattern against the background. It is this special natural composition and the feeling of an unbroken continuation of the pattern outside the borders of the picture that fascinate me in the subject. The silhouettes of trees might also
resemble a delicate lace pattern against the background. In my earlier tree paintings I often used water surface as a background to the birch trees or other tree species; I have also painted quite a few trees reflected on water. In my most recent work I have focused on reflections of trees on windows in normal every day situations in the city. What especially fascinates me here (similarly to the reflections on water) are firstly the subtle distortions and the slight fuzziness caused by the reflection on a window pane and secondly the spatial depth created by the various layers in the scene, for example by the light of a lamp shining through the window.
Street views of Munich introduce a new aspect to the theme since 2018. Here I focus on the nightly shadows of chestnut trees on the streets and house walls of Munich, or in the painting „Auf der Insel“ I present a water reflection of trees on a large puddle, which I discovered on a pedestrian road by the river Isar.
